A float tank, also known as a flotation tank, is a pod, tub, or pool filled with warm water and a high concentration of Epsom salt (magnesium sulfate) that allows the body to float effortlessly on the surface.
Float therapy is commonly used for stress relief, muscle recovery, pain management, and deep relaxation.
A sensory deprivation tank is a type of float tank designed to eliminate or significantly reduce external stimuli such as light and sound, creating a more immersive, meditative experience. While all sensory deprivation tanks are float tanks, not all float tanks are fully sensory deprivation environments—many float centers offer optional lighting or music to make the experience more comfortable, especially for first-time floaters.
Today was my first float tank experience. Since I was new to this, I'll tell you how to prepare for one, what went right and what I would change so you can #spalikeapro for your float tank experience!
How to prepare for your float tank experience:
You can bring a bathing suit or float naked, whichever you prefer. If you bring a bathing suit make sure you have dry underwear to change into and somewhere to put the wet clothes in
Most facilities will have you shower before and after your session
Bring a hair brush
Don't shave right before - the salt will sting. Also let the clinic know if you have cuts or wounds or health issues prior to floating.
What to expect during your session
Floating is effortless due to the salt. You don't need to know how to swim
The water is body temperature, not hot, not cold, so you feel you are one with the pool or tank
There may be calming lights and music in a flotation tank, and in a sensory deprivation tank no sound or lights (external stimuli is removed)
Usually earplugs are provided, ointment for wounds, a buoyant pillow for your head, and fresh water for your face (in case you get salt in your eyes).
What we liked and didn't like:
It was very relaxing and easy to float
It is private and you have the tub and room to yourself
The shower before and after is necessary
Did not like at this particular location hearing talking from other rooms
No hair dryer to dry hair after the session
Was not able to adjust the music volume

If we try another location that we like, we will post a review, so stay tuned!
What are the benefits of flotation therapy?
Ideal in pregnancy, and one of the more limited treatments pregnant women are able to do
The high magnesium in theory may help your system relax and have health benefits
Assist in meditation
Great for joints and nervous system
Float therapy can be a great way to relax and reset, and knowing what to expect ahead of time can make all the difference. Stay tuned for a future post where we’ll share float tank locations across Connecticut, and more reviews to come!
